Growing up we were a sports family. My dad and I watched basketball, football, and baseball religiously. Unfortunately, our teams rarely won but that is a complaint for another time.
Not only did I watch sports constantly, but I also played sports. One of the best things about playing sports is picking your team. I had a friend, named Kyle, who was super athletic. No matter which sport we were playing I always wanted Kyle on my team because I knew having Kyle gave us a good chance to win.
More important than sports, we are a part of a team in life too. And being on that team we are guaranteed to win. The opposing team does not even need to play because they do not have a chance to even score a point. The reason we are guaranteed to win is because God is on our team. Paul writes in Romans 8:31b, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” He asks this question rhetorically. God is for us. Nothing can stand against us. Nothing can stop us. Nothing can separate us. We are on God’s team!
Does this mean that we will not experience any hardship in life? No. Even with God on our team we experience pain through cancer and sickness, job loss, and financial hardships, even death and broken relationships. But during all the pain God is still for you. Our pain is being redeemed to mold us more into the image of his Son. This is the meaning of Romans 8:28. In the end, we win.
Take heart, my family, God is for you. You have nothing to fear. Write out on a piece of paper or in your phone, God is for (your name). Put it somewhere that you will see and be reminded this week. God is for you.
In Christ, Pastor Michael Covey
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” - Romans 8:38-39
