Last week we started to think about our fears. The honest truth about fear is that as long as we live on this side of eternity fear will be a part of our lives. It must not consume us, though.
Fear is a natural response of our fallen nature and we must reign over it. Fear is going to come. To be honest, I am fearful every week I get up to preach. Lies creep into my mind: what if they do not like me? What if I make someone mad? What if I say something wrong and look stupid? What if I am wrong theologically? All these lies are thrown at me and I am suddenly afraid.
We will get to this passage later in the book of 1 John but John writes this, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:18-19
I conquer my fear by trusting that I am loved. Perfect love drives out fear and Jesus' love for me is perfect. His love for me is proven by the cross where he went to die for me. The cross is proof that I am loved, wanted, accepted, and made whole. Even if I preach a C, D, or F grade sermon Jesus loves me the same.
His love for you does not change based on how well you perform. The cross happened to prove God’s love for you.
As you start to become fearful, identify the reason why. Take it to Jesus and remind yourself, Jesus loves me. You are wanted, completely accepted, and made whole by the king of the world.
Christ has come to set you free from fear.
