This weekend we celebrate our nation's independence and freedom. In our country, we have seen the idea of freedom be used to approve almost any behavior. Freedom is a Biblical theme we see from the very first book of the Bible through the end. One of the challenges we face is to make sure our understanding of freedom is Biblically based not culturally informed because the two are different.
The Biblical definition of freedom explained by Ravi Zacharias, “True freedom is not the liberty to do as we please; rather, to do as we ought.” A quick search of the word freedom on the internet defines it as, “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” You can see the paradox. Biblical freedom is the ability to do what we should do. Cultural freedom is the ability to do whatever we decide.
Paul says it this way in Galatians 5:13-14, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Jesus came to set us free, so we are free indeed! In Christ, we are free from the power and penalty of sin, free from shame and guilt, and free from fear.
The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus have set us free, however, we are not to use this freedom in Christ for our own selfish pleasures. Our freedom, as Paul says above, is to be used to serve others. Having been set free we desire for others to be free.
Harriet Tubman is celebrated because she knew the path to freedom and did not run off to enjoy her freedom alone. She knew she had the duty to bring others along that same path to experiencing freedom she had been given.
Similarly, having experienced freedom in Christ, we know what it costs to be free. We are to then bring others passionately along the narrow path to freedom in Christ Jesus. Who can you begin the journey of bringing to freedom?
In Christ, Pastor Michael Covey
“Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” -John 8:34-36
