Our lives are noisy. Think of the last time you were alone without the tv on, music playing, the radio going, people talking, or something streaming. For most those moments do not happen often and when they do they are moments… they don’t last very long.
One of the blessings of this pandemic is that we have been forced to slow down. To be still. And hopefully, be quiet. One of the disciplines we see Jesus being intentional about is silence and solitude.
Skim through the gospels and notice how many times Jesus got alone by himself to pray. This seeking out solitary places was a priority of Jesus and it should be our priority too.
With so much to do and so much going on, if we do not intentionally schedule a time to be alone and silent with God we are missing out. Allow this verse from James to marinate in your heart, “he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us.” (James 4:5) God the creator of the universe who sits enthroned in heaven with creatures singing his praises day and night jealously longs for you.
We give our time and spirit to so many things throughout our day some good and some bad but we often neglect the one who created us and jealously longs for us. Because God wants us and enjoys us so much his desire is for us to be in his presence. When we are with him in silence and solitude we should do more listening than speaking.
I find this much easier in the morning than at any other time. I try to wake up and not look at my phone. I do not want to check my email or text messages before I spend time alone with God. I have a specific chair I sit in every morning in the same place on my front porch. I go there and just sit with my eyes closed and ask God to speak whatever he wants. I find so much peace and contentment in those moments. He truly prepares my heart and spirit for the day to come.
You should find this place and time too. Schedule it into your calendar. If there are other people at home, let them know not to bother you for a while. Go and just be with God. He loves you so much that he jealously longs for you.
