We spent the last few weeks focusing on spiritual disciplines as an encouragement to do life with Jesus thus becoming more like Jesus. Many are used to doing life for Jesus, but if we try to do life for Jesus without or before doing life with Jesus we run the danger of putting the cart before the horse. Life for Jesus overflows out of our life with Jesus.
An age-old question is, why were we created. Since God existed forever in perfect community and relationship as the trinity not needing anything, why create the heavens, earth, and its inhabitants? In God’s grace, he has revealed the answer. Isaiah 43:7, “everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” You were created for God’s glory.
Glory is an extremely challenging word to define. All definitions fall short of the magnitude of the word. John Piper says glory “is like the word Beauty.” Piper later says, “the glory of God is the beauty and excellence of his manifold perfections. It is an attempt to put into words what God is like in his magnificence and purity. It refers to his infinite and overflowing fullness of all that is good.” God is glorious. By claiming that we were created for his glory, does not mean that we add anything to his glory or he somehow becomes more glorious because of us. God is already perfect and does not need anything.
When we say that we were created for God’s glory we mean that God created us to display his glory, that his glory might be known and praised. For this to be true, people need to see us and in turn, see Jesus.
If when our neighbors see us they notice things like how rude we are to people, or how self-centered our life is then we are not displaying God’s glory. Even if people look at us and see how nice we are, generous we are, or funny we are but they do not see Jesus as the reason then we are not displaying God’s glory. We are not trying to become more moral, we are trying to become more like Jesus. The risen Lord.
Take the risk of asking someone this week what they see when they think of your life. You may be surprised by their answer.
Going forward, let us be a community of people who put Jesus on display above all else. The more of our life we spend with Jesus, the more of his glory we will put on display.
Next week we will answer, how we best glorify God.
