Last week we talked about the glorious opportunity we have to go and tell our loved ones about the good news of Jesus. I would love to hear how that is going! How are you praying for your friends, family, and neighbors? How are your conversations going with them? How is your prayer evangelism going? God wants to use you. He loves you as his own child.
Jesus’ next words in the great commission are, “baptizing them.” Baptism is one of the topics that are extremely controversial. People in history have been killed over their beliefs concerning baptism and denominations are split over it. So what is all the fuss about? Some of the questions are: do we dunk or sprinkle? Do we baptize babies or adults? Do we baptize followers of Jesus or anyone? Does someone need to be baptized more than once? Is it important which water someone is baptized in? These are just a few of the questions we could wade into, but we will not be answering the majority of them today.
Jesus’ emphasis on baptizing disciples is about community and relationship. In a weird way baptism functions similarly to an initiation. Initiation for some groups is a way of discerning who really wants to be there. By being baptized within a community of believers it is an outward symbol of saying, “I am all in. I want to be a part of this group. I want to grow with this group. I want to be a part of this family.” When we are baptized we are demonstrating that we are now a part of this family of believers.
The Christian faith is about community. We were created for community. Notice in Genesis 2:18, God says “it is not good for man to be alone.” This is the first time God says something is not good. Further than that, the man was not alone because God was there. We were created to be with God within a community. Therefore, God says, “I will make a helper suitable for him.” It was not enough for man to be with God alone. It was enough for man to be with God within a community. Being baptized into the church gives us our family community where we get to be with God and our brothers and sisters in Christ.
God does not want you to be alone. He wants you to be in community. There are no lone ranger Christians. A part of being a follower of Jesus is being a part of a community, called the church. I pray that we would continue to enjoy our community and invite others to join our family.
