One of the great traditions of our country is the season of Thanksgiving. To reserve a time in the year where people are expected to remove the blinders of bitterness and grief and replace them with clear glasses of thankfulness and gratitude is a great reset for our hearts and minds.
In the midst of 2020, you may be struggling to find a reason to be thankful or you may have been reminded of many blessings this year. Regardless of your perspective, we all have a reason to be thankful and these next three weeks we will be encouraged and reminded to be thankful for the Father giving the Son, the Son denying himself in order to give us life, and the Spirit filling us.
Have you ever been to the White House in Washington D.C? When I visited D.C. I was so excited to go see the White House. When thinking of all the history, power, elegance, and esteem that resides in that building I could hardly contain myself when I was on the way. Walking towards the White House my 8th-grade little heart began to flutter. I was getting closer and closer and then suddenly I could not get any closer. I was hundreds of yards away with a fence in between me and the White House. My heart sank. I realized that the people in the White House with all of their power, elegance, and esteem designed the grounds to keep people like me out.
The assumption is that God the Father does the same thing when designing the heavens and the earth. He stays up there and has nothing to do with us down here. However, nothing could be further from the truth! The Father in all of his independence and infinite righteousness loves us so much that He sent his Son Jesus into the earth. He became one of us. We could never become righteous enough to be with God because of our sin. Therefore God, who we rebelled against, sent Jesus, the only one who could make us righteous, into the world. The grace of God purchased your way into a relationship with God again. All you have to do is believe and repent of the sins that Jesus died for.
Spend some time this week reading through John chapter 3. Marvel at the response that Jesus gave Nicodemus. Feel what it cost the Father to send the Son. With gratitude and thanksgiving rejoice in the love the Father has for you.
In Christ,
