When All Seems to Crumble

This weeks devotion was supposed to be about the history of Santa Claus. If you are intersted in learning more of the historical St. Nicholas, check out this article.

Given the recent circumstances I thought I would talk a little about how to persevere in times when it seems like all is falling apart. I have not done this perfect, but have learned a ton in the last few months.

The first place that I think can be overlooked is community. Community can be difficult because it requires transparency. Especially difficult when it requires you talking about taboo topics, like mental health. Know that if you allow shame to penetrate, it will inevitably drive you into isolation. Our hardships should drive us towards community. We need one another. We were created for community. I cannot imagine going through this season without the elders of this church praying for me, having me over their home, and caring for me.

Something else that helps is remembering the truth found in the Psalms. If you take the time to read through the Psalms you realize that they are rarely written because everything is going well. The psalmist is often expressing his frustration, doubt, fear, and anxiety. David cries in Psalm 6, “my soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long?” He basically looks at God and says, do you care? Waving his hands in the air begging for help and pleading for mercy. The beauty in these Psalms of lament is that they are honest with God. God is big enough and he cares enough to hear the deep cries of our heart.

We also see that the laments have a basic four part strucuture: 1, call to God. In their pain, the psalmist still chooses to come to God. 2, complaint. After addressing God, the psalmists explains why they are upset. 3, bold request for help. The psalmist talks to God and lets him know why they are upset, and then he asks for God to help. 4, statement of trust. While emracing the pain and the reliance on God, the psalmist declares that he still trusts in God.

When life seems to crumble, I hope that we all cling to our community and are honest with God about our pain while trusting that he is our salvation. God is good, He knows what is best and He does what is best. Even when we do not understand.

In Christ,

Pastor Michael Covey

“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” -Psalm 13:5
